Asbestos is the largest occupational killer in the UK. It can be found in thousands of different building products historically used in homes, schools, offices and factories.
People most at risk from contracting asbestos related diseases are workmen and building maintenance operatives, who unknowingly move asbestos.
There was a law passed in 2004, designed to protect these operatives.
If you are responsible for maintaining any type of property or building with the exception of a domestic home with no common or shared areas, you must manage, and are responsible for the asbestos within it. Failure to comply can lead to heavy fines, disqualification as a company director and even imprisonment.
Asbestos can be identified by carrying out an inspection of the premises by a qualified surveyor. Samples of suspect materials are collected and removed for later analysis. Any confirmed material containing asbestos is assessed for risk - and a recommendation can be made on how to manage those risks.
