| Asbestos Experts Beat The Clock On Homes Project
Nottingham-based asbestos removal specialist HB Insulations is making fast work of its part in a scheme to create modern, comfortable homes for hundreds of Derbyshire families.
It is stripping out materials containing asbestos in homes in Amber Valley, Derbyshire that are undergoing major modernisation – but has just a couple of days to complete the highly specialised work in each property to keep the project on track.
HB Insulations is working alongside the main contractor Connaught, on a scheme to improve 90 homes managed and maintained by Amber Valley Housing in Jura, Ledo, Pasteur and Tavistock Avenues, Ripley.
The project, which began in April, is part of a much bigger scheme to upgrade thousands of homes looked after by Amber Valley Housing in Derbyshire to meet the government’s Decent Homes standard by 2008, two years ahead of a 2010 deadline.
Connaught is modernising around 450 homes a year for five years under the project, which involves installing new kitchens, bathrooms, double glazed windows and doors and central heating. Some properties need rewiring and in the properties requiring most work, tenants are moving out and their homes are redecorated and carpeted before they return.
The company appointed HB Insulations to survey all properties scheduled for modernisation to identify those containing asbestos, so that time for removal of the material can be built into the work schedule.
HB Insulations also safely remove any asbestos found. In the Ripley properties – flats, bungalows and houses built in the late 1960s and early 1970s – asbestos was found in locations including ceiling coatings, floor tiles and flues.
Darren Skinner, from HB Insulations, said: “Connaught has just five weeks to complete each property from start to finish, so our work has to be carried out in a couple of days. It is demanding, but we are rising to the challenge.”
